FLAMES

The lyrics to Flames were borrowed from a text called Gospel of the Witches (Charles G. Leland, 1890). The text tells the tale of how Diana, goddess of witchcraft, had by her brother Lucifer (god of Light) a daughter named Aradia.
According to the Gospel, Aradia, the female messiah, came down to earth, established witches and witchcraft, and then returned to heaven.
Aradia taught witchcraft as a tool of liberty and empowerment to groups of people who had been oppressed and enslaved by the rich lords of the land. These people had been forced to live in the mountains and forests as outlaws and criminals– all to avoid slavery. Aradia, following the orders of her mother Diana, came down to earth to bestow upon those people the secrets of sorcery, witchcraft and spellwork as tools to be used against their oppressors, in the pursuit of freedom and Liberty.
